Where to find your section scores on your ACT score report
ACT publishes scores online through your MyACT account and, for state and district testing, on a printed student report. Both layouts contain the same score blocks. Based on ACT's own description of the student report:
- Find the "Your Scores" block. It lists your Composite and each multiple-choice section — English, Math, Reading and Science (if you took it) — as whole numbers on the 1–36 scale. These section scores are the numbers this calculator needs.
- Ignore the shaded band. ACT prints a shaded range around each score to indicate that scores are estimates. Enter the single whole number, not the low or high end of the band.
- Skip the Writing score. If you took the optional Writing test, it appears on a 2–12 scale. It never counts toward the composite and does not fit the 1–36 fields.
- Skip ELA, STEM and the readiness benchmarks. These are derived from your section scores. The calculator recreates STEM for you from Math and Science; you do not enter it.
- Do not use the reporting-category numbers. Further down the report, each section lists the number of questions in a category, how many you answered correctly and a percentage. Those are counts and percentages, not scale scores.

The ACT composite formula, term by term
Both versions of the composite follow the same three steps; only the list of sections changes.
- Add the section scores that count. Enhanced ACT: English + Math + Reading. Legacy ACT: English + Math + Reading + Science.
- Divide by the number of sections added: 3 for Enhanced, 4 for Legacy. This gives the unrounded average.
- Round to the nearest whole number. If the fraction is less than one-half, round down; if it is one-half or more, round up. The result is your composite on the 1–36 scale.

- (30, 30, 31) → 30. The sum is 91; 91 ÷ 3 = 30.33. The fraction .33 is less than one-half, so the composite rounds down to 30.
- (30, 31, 31) → 31. The sum is 92; 92 ÷ 3 = 30.67. The fraction .67 is more than one-half, so the composite rounds up to 31 — a single extra point in one section moved the composite.
- (30, 31, 32) → 31. The sum is 93, which divides evenly: 93 ÷ 3 = 31 with no rounding needed.

- (30, 31, 32, 33) → 32. The sum is 126; 126 ÷ 4 = 31.5. A fraction of exactly one-half rounds up, so the legacy composite is 32. The same English, Math and Reading scores give an Enhanced composite of 31 (93 ÷ 3), which is why the formula choice matters.
- (30, 30, 30, 31) → 30. The sum is 121; 121 ÷ 4 = 30.25, and .25 rounds down.
- (30, 31, 31, 33) → 31. The sum is 125; 125 ÷ 4 = 31.25, and .25 rounds down.

(30, 30) → 30 needs no rounding. (30, 31) → 31 because 30.5 rounds up. (25, 28) → 27 because 26.5 rounds up. ACT's report documentation describes STEM as the average of Math and Science rounded to the nearest whole number, with 0.5 rounded up.
Why .5 appears only in legacy and STEM, never in the Enhanced composite
Rounding only matters when the average is not already a whole number, and which fractions can appear depends entirely on the divisor. Dividing a whole-number sum by 3 leaves a remainder of 0, 1 or 2, so the fractional part of an Enhanced average is always .00, .33 or .67 — never exactly .5. Dividing by 4 leaves a remainder of 0, 1, 2 or 3 (fractions .00, .25, .50, .75), and dividing by 2 leaves 0 or 1 (fractions .00 or .50). The "one-half or more rounds up" clause therefore only ever changes a legacy composite or a STEM score.

When the STEM score is shown
The calculator displays STEM in both Enhanced and Legacy mode, but only when Math and Science are both valid whole numbers from 1 to 36. If Science is blank or invalid, STEM is hidden and the panel explains why. This mirrors ACT's rule that no STEM score is reported for students who did not take the Science section. Switching between modes never clears your Science score; it only changes whether Science is required for the composite.
Composite versus Superscore
A composite on this page is calculated from one test date. Mixing section scores from different dates is not the same as an official ACT Superscore. Current ACT Superscore averages the highest English, Math and Reading scores across test dates; Science is used with Math for STEM and is not part of that composite. See ACT Superscore FAQs. Frequently asked questions
- Is the ACT composite rounded or truncated?
- Rounded. ACT states that fractions less than one-half are rounded down and fractions of one-half or more are rounded up. An average of 30.67 becomes 31; an average of 30.33 becomes 30.
- Can an Enhanced ACT composite average end in exactly .5?
- No. The Enhanced composite divides the sum of three whole numbers by 3, so the only possible fractional parts are 0, one-third (.33) and two-thirds (.67). Exactly .5 can only occur when dividing by 2 (STEM) or by 4 (legacy composite), and in both cases ACT rounds it up.
- Why is my Enhanced composite different from the composite on an older report with similar section scores?
- Because the formulas average different sections. The legacy composite included Science as one quarter of the average; the Enhanced composite uses only English, Math and Reading. A strong or weak Science score therefore moved a legacy composite but does not move an Enhanced one.
- Does the STEM score count toward the ACT composite?
- No. STEM is a separate 1–36 score equal to the average of Math and Science, rounded to the nearest whole number with .5 rounded up. ACT reports it only when both Math and Science scores exist, which is why this calculator shows STEM only when both fields contain a valid score.
Summary
Add the sections that count, divide by their number, and round half up. Enhanced composites can only carry fractions of .33 or .67; legacy composites and STEM scores can land exactly on .5 and always round up from there.
